If you are planning a dive trip for the summer or fall, you have probably looked up hurricane season Belize dates. It is a fair question. Belize sits on the Caribbean Sea, and the Caribbean is part of the Atlantic hurricane basin, so storms are a real part of the second half of the year.
This guide is for divers, snorkelers and families deciding when to come, or wondering what to do about dates already booked. We stick to what NOAA, the US ocean and weather agency, says about the season, explain the storm terms you will hear on the news, and share a practical planning checklist.
When is hurricane season in Belize?
Quick answer: Belize lies in the Atlantic basin, where NOAA says hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. About 97 percent of tropical cyclone activity happens in that window, though storms can form outside it. Most weeks bring no storm, but travelers should buy suitable insurance, stay flexible and watch official forecasts.
Hurricane season in Belize: the official dates
According to NOAA’s explainer on what a hurricane is, the Atlantic basin includes the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf. Hurricane season there begins on June 1 and ends on November 30.
NOAA is careful to add that there is nothing magical about those dates. In its explainer on the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon, it notes that 97 percent of tropical cyclone activity falls inside the season, and that storms can and do form before and after it.
What makes a hurricane
A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone, a rotating storm system that forms over warm tropical or subtropical water. NOAA lists the ingredients as an existing weather disturbance, warm ocean water, moisture and relatively light winds. When those line up long enough, they can produce violent winds, large waves, heavy rain and flooding.
Storm terms you will hear on the forecast
Forecasts use a handful of terms that sound alike but mean very different things. Here is how NOAA defines them. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center predicts and tracks Atlantic storms, and your local weather service and emergency officials issue the alerts that apply where you are.
| Term | What it means | What a traveler should do |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical depression | Organized storm with sustained winds under 39 mph | Keep an eye on the forecast |
| Tropical storm | Sustained winds of 39 mph or higher | Expect rough seas and possible changes to boat trips |
| Hurricane | Sustained winds of 74 mph or higher, rated in categories 1 to 5 | Follow instructions from local officials |
| Hurricane watch | Hurricane conditions are possible; issued about 48 hours before tropical-storm-force winds | Review your plans, contact your airline and lodging |
| Hurricane warning | Hurricane conditions are expected; issued about 36 hours before tropical-storm-force winds | Finish preparations and leave if officials direct you to |
The watch and warning timings above are NOAA’s for the United States. Wherever you are staying, the alerts and instructions from local authorities are the ones to follow.

Diving in hurricane season
A season is not a storm. Most days between June and November are ordinary diving days, and the reef does not close for the season. What changes is the chance that weather somewhere in the region affects your trip.
Strong wind and big swell can make boat trips unsafe or uncomfortable, even when a storm stays far away. Longer trips over open water feel this most. If a system is approaching, expect dive plans to change at short notice, and treat any day on the water as a bonus rather than a promise.
Local trips from White Sands Dive Shop leave at 9:00, with pickup at the dock of your hotel. How we handle a weather day for your booking is something to settle with us directly before you travel, so please ask. Belize weather by month
We do not publish a month-by-month weather table, because averages say little about the week you will actually get. The safest summary is NOAA’s: the season covers June through November, and storms are possible on either side of it. Warm-water months also bring other seasonal questions, such as the itchy rash some swimmers get, covered in our guide to seabather’s eruption in Belize waters.

Travel insurance for a storm-season trip
Insurance is one of the most useful steps for a trip between June and November. US travel health guidance for travelers says some types of travel insurance help cover costs if your travel is cancelled or disrupted, and it names three kinds worth considering.
- Trip cancellation or disruption cover: protects what you spent on flights and bookings; check the fine print for how it treats weather.
- Travel health insurance: the same guidance calls it especially important for adventure activities such as scuba diving.
- Medical evacuation insurance: covers emergency transport to a hospital, bought alone or as part of a health policy.

Planning tips for June to November
- Book flexible: choose flights and lodging you can change, and keep confirmation details handy.
- Watch the forecast: check official forecasts in the week before you leave and daily while you travel.
- Plan the island hop: San Pedro is a 15-minute flight from the Belize International Airport; read our guide on how to get to Ambergris Caye.
- Leave a buffer: a spare day gives you room to make up a dive lost to weather and a safe gap before you fly; see our guide to flying after diving in Belize.
- Follow local officials: if a watch or warning is issued, their instructions come first.

Hurricane season, Belize: your questions answered
When does hurricane season start and end in Belize?
Belize is in the Atlantic basin, where NOAA says hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Storms can occasionally form outside those dates.
Is it safe to travel to Belize during hurricane season?
Many people travel during these months without seeing a storm, but the risk is real. Buy suitable insurance, keep plans flexible and follow forecasts and local officials.
Can I still dive between June and November?
Yes, most days are normal diving days. Rough seas from a distant or approaching system can change boat plans at short notice, so ask us how weather days are handled before you book.
What is the difference between a hurricane watch and a warning?
NOAA says a watch means hurricane conditions are possible, while a warning means they are expected. A warning is the signal to finish preparations and follow official instructions.
Do I need travel insurance for a fall trip?
It is well worth considering. Look at trip cancellation or disruption cover as well as travel health and evacuation cover, and read the fine print on how each policy treats weather.
