Working out how to get to Ambergris Caye is simpler than it looks on a map. You fly into the country’s international airport, then take a short hop or a boat ride out to the island. Most of the planning is about timing, not distance.
This guide is for divers, snorkelers and their travel companions booking a first trip to San Pedro. It covers both legs of the journey, compares the island flight with the water taxi, and shows how to line up your travel days with your dive days at White Sands Dive Shop.
How do you get to Ambergris Caye from the international airport?
Quick answer: Fly into Philip Goldson International Airport near Belize City, where all commercial international flights land. From there, take a domestic flight, about 15 minutes to the island, or travel into Belize City and board one of the regularly scheduled water taxis to San Pedro. Book the connection before you leave home.
How to get to Ambergris Caye in two legs
Every route to the island has the same shape. The first leg brings you into the country, and the second carries you across the water to San Pedro. Think of them as two separate bookings that need to fit together.
- Book your international flight into Philip Goldson International Airport.
- Choose the island connection: a domestic flight or a water taxi.
- Leave a comfortable buffer between the two, in case your first flight runs late.
- Tell your hotel and us when you expect to arrive, so the first morning on the reef is set.

Step one: flying into the country
According to the Belize Tourism Board page on getting here, commercial airlines all land at Philip Goldson International Airport in Ladyville, a few minutes from Belize City. Our homepage calls it the Belize International Airport, and it is the same place. The board lists flights from many cities in the United States and Canada.
The same page asks every traveler arriving and departing to fill in a digital embarkation and disembarkation form before the trip. Do it at home while you still have reliable wifi. Keep your passport, return ticket and hotel address in your carry-on, not in the checked bag.

Flight to San Pedro Belize: the quick island hop
Ambergris Caye is only a 15-minute flight from the international airport, which is why most of our divers fly straight across. The tourism board describes local airlines as the fastest and most popular way to travel around the country. It also says their schedules are coordinated with international arrivals and departures.
Domestic planes are small, so pack with that in mind. Soft bags travel more easily than rigid cases, and heavy dive gear may need checking with the airline in advance. Our Belize dive trip packing list helps you decide what to bring and what to rent here.

Water taxi to Ambergris Caye from Belize City
Boats are the other way across. The Belize Tourism Board guide to getting around calls water taxis the primary transport between the islands and the mainland. It says they run on a regular schedule between Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro.
The boats leave from Belize City rather than the airport, so you need ground transport into town first. Check the current timetable with the operator before you travel, because the last boat of the day sets your deadline. Some travelers like the ride, since it gives a first look at the cayes and the color of the water.
Flight or water taxi: which suits your trip
Both routes end at the same island, and both work well. The right one depends on your arrival time, your luggage and how you like to travel. This side-by-side view covers the main differences.
| Question | Domestic flight | Water taxi |
|---|---|---|
| Where it starts | The international airport, with schedules coordinated with international flights | Belize City, so you need a ride from the airport first |
| Time in transit | About 15 minutes in the air | Longer; check the operator’s current timetable |
| Luggage | Small aircraft, so pack light and ask about dive gear | Ask the operator about bag limits before you go |
| Best for | Short trips, late afternoon arrivals and divers who want the most time on the reef | Travelers who enjoy the boat ride or plan a stop on another caye |
| Plan around | Booking a seat ahead in busy weeks | The last departure of the day |
Whichever you choose, confirm the times yourself close to departure. Schedules change, and we would rather you rely on the operator than on a printed list.

Arriving in San Pedro and getting to the reef
White Sands Dive Shop is on the beach in San Pedro, overlooking the barrier reef. Once you are settled, the last leg is the easy one. Our local dive and snorkel trips leave at 9:00, and we pick you up at the dock of your hotel.
That pickup means you do not need to find your way across town on a dive morning. Send us your hotel name when you book, and the boat will come to you. Our guide to scuba diving on Ambergris Caye describes the reef dives, the night dive and the full-day atoll trips.
Choosing your travel dates
The route stays the same all year, but the weather does not. Our article on the best time to dive Ambergris Caye explains the hurricane calendar and how to build spare days into your week.
Planning dive days around travel days
Travel days are the hardest to dive on. A delayed connection can cost you a morning, so we suggest keeping the day you land free and starting on the reef the next morning. You will dive more relaxed after a night’s sleep.
- Book long trips, such as the full-day Great Blue Hole trip with three dives, early in the week so weather has room to move them.
- Keep your last day light. Read our guide to flying after diving in Belize before you fix the time of your final dive.
- If you are out of practice, a scuba refresher course on Ambergris Caye makes a good first morning.
- Snorkelers in your group can join a Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley snorkel trip on any morning.
Who you will dive with once you arrive
White Sands Dive Shop is a 5 Star PADI Dive Facility, a PADI International Resort Association member and licensed by the Belize Tourism Board. It is owned and operated by Elbert Greer, a PADI IDC Staff Instructor. You can read Elbert Greer’s background as a PADI instructor before you travel.
Bryan Nelson wrote after his visit to the island: “We have many vivid memories of our vacation in your beautiful part of the world – one of which is our experience meeting you.” His full note is with the other letters from Elbert’s dive students.
