Ask ten divers about the best time to dive Ambergris Caye and you will hear ten favorite months. The honest answer is that the reef is here all year, and so are we. What changes through the year is the weather pattern, and the one date range every diver should know about is the Atlantic hurricane season.
This guide is for divers and snorkelers choosing travel dates. It explains what the official calendar says, how to plan a week of diving around it, and why we would rather tell you about current conditions by email than print a promise about water temperature on a web page.
When is the best time to dive Ambergris Caye?
Quick answer: You can dive Ambergris Caye year round, and White Sands Dive Shop runs local dive and snorkel trips daily at 9:00. December through May falls outside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30 and is busiest from mid-August to mid-October. Conditions vary day to day, so email us for current ones.
Diving runs all year on Ambergris Caye
White Sands Dive Shop sits on the beach in San Pedro, overlooking what we have always called the largest barrier reef in this hemisphere. Our local diving and snorkeling trips are scheduled to leave at 9:00, and we pick you up at the dock of your hotel. That schedule is not seasonal.
Because the reef is so close to the island, a local dive does not need a long crossing. Our 1, 2 and 3 tank barrier reef dives, the Hol Chan dive and the night dive all start from here. Our guide to scuba diving on Ambergris Caye explains each one.

The Ambergris Caye diving season and the hurricane calendar
The NOAA National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Its statistical peak is September 10, and most activity happens between mid-August and mid-October.
A season is a window of higher risk, not a forecast for your week. It tells you when storms are more likely, not whether one will reach the island during your stay. Still, if your dates are fixed and you cannot move them, it is worth knowing where you stand before you book.
| Time of year | Hurricane calendar | Planning tip |
|---|---|---|
| December to May | Outside the Atlantic hurricane season | The most predictable stretch on paper; book early around holiday weeks |
| June to mid-August | Early season, before the main activity window | Keep an eye on forecasts and book flexible rooms and flights |
| Mid-August to mid-October | Most activity; peak on September 10 | Add trip insurance, keep spare days and check forecasts often |
| Mid-October to November 30 | Late season, activity tapering toward the end | Watch the forecast in the days before you fly |
Whatever month you pick, check the National Hurricane Center outlook in the week before you fly. If a system is forming, email us and we will talk through your options with you.

Water temperature for Ambergris Caye diving: ask us for today
Many travel pages print a neat chart of water temperature and visibility by month. We do not, because conditions on the reef change with wind, rain and current, sometimes from one morning to the next. A number on a chart cannot tell you what the water will be like on your dive.
Instead, email us a week or two before you travel and we will tell you what divers are seeing now. That is also the right time to ask which wetsuit thickness to pack, or whether to rent one when you arrive.
- Ask about the water and the sea state for your travel dates.
- Ask which exposure suit our divers are wearing that month.
- Tell us which trips matter most to you, so we can plan the order of your week.

How to plan a week of dives around the weather
The best plan works in any month. Put the dives that need the calmest sea early in your stay, and keep the local reef dives for the days in between. That way one breezy day costs you nothing.
- Book the long trip first. The full-day Great Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef trip includes three dives and a lot of open water, so give it room to move to another day.
- Add the marine reserve. Our Hol Chan Marine Reserve dive with the Shark Ray Alley snorkel is close to the island and easy to slot in.
- Save an evening for the dark. A night dive on the Ambergris Caye reef shows you a different cast of animals.
- Leave a spare day near the end, and allow a gap between your last dive and your flight home.
If a storm is forecast for your dates
If a named storm is forecast near your travel dates, contact us early. We would rather help you adjust your dive plan days ahead than leave you guessing. Keep your airline and hotel contact details handy, and read the change and cancellation terms of each booking before you leave home.
Pack for sun and showers in any month. A light rain jacket for the boat ride, reef safe sunscreen and a dry bag for your phone and papers are worth bringing whatever the calendar says. Bring your certification card and logbook as well.

New to diving or out of practice
If you are not certified yet, the season matters less than the time you can give a course. Our guide to learning to dive on Ambergris Caye sets out the PADI courses we teach, from a first try dive to full certification.
Certified divers who have not been underwater for a while can start the trip with a scuba refresher course on Ambergris Caye. Snorkelers in your group can join a Mexico Rocks snorkeling trip while you dive.

Who you dive with
White Sands Dive Shop is a 5 Star PADI Dive Facility, licensed by the Belize Tourism Board and owned and operated by Elbert Greer. Elbert is a PADI IDC Staff Instructor, and you can read Elbert Greer’s background as a PADI instructor before you book.
Former student Vivake K. Bhalla put it simply: “Elbert Greer was an outstanding instructor with a lot of experience and useful tips.” There are more in the letters from Elbert’s dive students.
Best time to dive Ambergris Caye: your questions answered
Can you dive Ambergris Caye all year?
Yes. White Sands Dive Shop runs local dive and snorkel trips daily, leaving at 9:00 with pickup at the dock of your hotel.
When is hurricane season?
The NOAA National Hurricane Center gives the Atlantic hurricane season as June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October.
What is the water temperature for diving?
It changes with the weather, so we do not publish a figure. Email us before your trip and we will tell you current conditions and which wetsuit to bring.
Should I avoid booking in September?
Not necessarily, but September 10 is the statistical peak of the season. If you book then, choose flexible flights and rooms and consider trip insurance.
When should I book the Blue Hole trip?
Book it early in your stay. It is a full-day trip with three dives, so leaving spare days gives you room if the sea is rough.
Ask us about conditions for your dates
Tell us when you plan to travel, how many divers and snorkelers are coming, and your certification level. Email Elbert at elbertgreer@fastmail.fm or call 011 (501) 226 2405 for current conditions and to plan your dives.
