Private scuba lessons on Ambergris Caye suit anyone who would rather learn with their own instructor than in a crowded class. Nervous beginners, couples, families with a teenager and travelers on a tight schedule all ask us for this.
White Sands Dive Shop is a 5 Star PADI Dive Facility on the beach in San Pedro. Since rebranding after the pandemic, we focus on smaller groups and more personalized service, with private guides for customers who want them. This guide explains how a private lesson works, which courses fit the format, and how to prepare.
Can I book private scuba lessons on Ambergris Caye?
Quick answer: Yes. White Sands Dive Shop offers smaller groups, private guides and personalized instruction with PADI courses from Discover Scuba Diving to Open Water. Our 2025 offer adds pool lessons on location at BTB Gold Standard resorts, hotels and guest houses at no additional charge. Email us your dates and the course you want.
How private scuba lessons work at White Sands Dive Shop
Our entry-level courses follow the same pattern: knowledge, pool skills and open water. Knowledge covers the theory, the pool is where you practice skills in calm water, and open water means real dives on the reef. A private lesson keeps that structure but sets the pace around you.
- Email us your dates, the course you have in mind and any past diving experience.
- Complete the knowledge part, either in class with us or online before you travel where the course allows it.
- Practice your skills in the pool with your instructor until they feel natural.
- Make your open water dives on the barrier reef, with our trips leaving at 9:00 from the dock of your hotel.
The private format matters most in the pool. That is where most nerves show up, and where an instructor who is not splitting attention across a group can slow down and repeat a skill until it clicks.

Scuba lessons at your hotel pool in San Pedro
Our 2025 homepage copy says SCUBA lessons can be done on location in the pools of resorts, hotels and guest houses that are BTB Gold Standard, with no additional charge. BTB stands for the Belize Tourism Board, which also licenses White Sands Dive Shop.
In practice this means your first breaths underwater can happen a few steps from your room. Families like it because a non-diving partner can watch from the pool deck. Nervous students like it because the setting is familiar and quiet.
Ask us when you book whether your property qualifies. If it does not, we will tell you where the pool session will take place instead.

Private lessons vs small group vs standard class
Private lessons are not right for everyone. Some students enjoy learning alongside a buddy, and a small group still gets plenty of attention. Use this comparison to decide.
| Question | Private lesson | Small group | Standard class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instructor attention | All of it on you | Shared with a few others | Shared with the whole class |
| Pace | Set by you | Set by the group | Set by the schedule |
| Schedule | Built around your trip | Agreed with the group | Fixed start days |
| Best for | Nervous learners, families, short stays | Friends or couples learning together | Students happy to follow a set plan |
| Trade-off | Less time learning with other students | Some waiting while others practice | Least flexibility |
Once you are certified, the same one-to-one approach carries on underwater. Our guide to a private dive charter on Ambergris Caye covers diving with your own boat and guide.
Are you fit to dive? What to check before you book
Health questions are easier to settle at home than at the pool. If you have a medical condition, take medication or have not exercised in a while, talk to your doctor before your trip.
Divers Alert Network explains that fitness to dive covers both physical fitness and medical fitness. It notes that scuba is usually leisurely but can turn strenuous in waves or current. It also suggests that people who sit most of the day start exercising gradually, and offers a preparticipation screening questionnaire to work through first.

- Work through a medical screening questionnaire at home and see your doctor if anything raises a question.
- Tell us about any nerves or past bad experiences in the water, so we can plan the pool time.
- Plan your open water dives early in your stay, leaving a gap before your flight home.
- Pack a mask that fits you well if you own one; other gear can be rented.
