You do not need a certification card to breathe underwater on your vacation. Our Discover Scuba Diving Ambergris Caye experience is the shortest way to try scuba for real, with a pool session first and then a dive in the ocean beside a professional.
This page is for complete beginners, for the curious partner of a certified diver, and for families who want to see whether scuba is for them before committing to a full course. It covers what happens on the day, how deep you go, the fitness questions to settle before you travel, and how Discover Scuba compares with snorkeling and with certification.
Can you try Discover Scuba Diving on Ambergris Caye without a certification?
Quick answer: Yes, you can scuba dive on Ambergris Caye without being certified. White Sands Dive Shop’s Discover Scuba Diving experience includes basic knowledge, a pool session with gear and one open water dive. It qualifies you to dive in the Marine Reserve with a certified divemaster at depths up to 40 feet.
Can you scuba dive in Belize without being certified?
Yes, as long as you dive under supervision. Discover Scuba Diving, often shortened to DSD, is a PADI program designed for people with no certification at all. It is an experience rather than a course, so you do not leave with a card, but you do get a real ocean dive.
The reef is worth the effort. Belize is home to the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Belize Tourism Board’s scuba diving guide lists corals, sharks, turtles and stingrays among what divers see. Our shop on the beach in San Pedro overlooks that same reef.

What happens on your Discover Scuba day
Our Discover Scuba Diving experience is built to show you the underwater world with the minimum of cost and time. It runs in three steps, each one preparing you for the next.
- Basic knowledge: the essentials of the equipment and of breathing underwater.
- Pool session with gear: you put on the full kit and practice the few skills you need before you go near the ocean.
- One open water dive: with a certified divemaster beside you, to a maximum of 40 feet.
Our local dive and snorkel trips leave at 9:00, and we pick up at the dock of your hotel. Email us your dates and we will tell you how your Discover Scuba day fits around that schedule.
Discover Scuba and Hol Chan
Our course description says Discover Scuba qualifies you to dive in the Marine Reserve with a certified divemaster. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the reserve on our local trip list, where we combine a dive with a snorkel at Shark Ray Alley. Read our guide to diving the Hol Chan Marine Reserve from San Pedro to see what the reserve is like, and remember that park tickets are not included in our trip prices.

Discover Scuba, snorkeling or certification: which suits you?
Discover Scuba sits between a snorkel trip and a full course. The table sets out what each option includes, how deep you go and with whom, and whether you come home with a certification.
| Option | What it includes | Depth and supervision | Certification | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snorkel trip | Boat trip to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, or Mexico Rocks | At the surface | None needed | Anyone who wants to see the reef without scuba |
| Discover Scuba Diving | Basic knowledge, pool session with gear, one open water dive | Up to 40 feet with a certified divemaster | No card; an experience | First-timers with one day to spare |
| PADI Open Water Diver | Five classes plus four open water dives, 3-4 days | Up to 60 feet with a certified buddy, per PADI | PADI Open Water Diver card | Anyone who expects to dive again |
| Scuba Refresher | Pool review, a Hol Chan dive with the instructor and a Shark Ray Alley snorkel | Guided by the instructor | For divers who are already certified | Certified divers after a long break |
If one dive leaves you wanting more, the PADI Open Water course on Ambergris Caye is the next step, and our complete guide to learning to dive on Ambergris Caye compares every course. Prefer to stay at the surface? See our Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley snorkeling trips. For the cost of each option, check the current course prices on our Water Sports page.

Fitness and medical questions for first-time divers
Scuba is relaxed when conditions are calm, but it can become hard work in waves or current. The Divers Alert Network guide to fitness to dive rates scuba as moderate to vigorous exercise and names low aerobic capacity as the biggest limiting factor. DAN also suggests that people who sit most of the day start gentle training before they snorkel or dive.
Before any scuba program you fill in a short medical questionnaire. DAN advises answering it honestly, since it exists to keep you safe. Healthy people may only need the form, while some conditions call for a doctor’s evaluation first.
Settle these before you fly
- If you have a heart, lung, ear or other ongoing condition, talk to your doctor at home before the trip.
- If your doctor clears you, bring the written evaluation with you.
- If you mostly sit during the day, start some gentle exercise in the weeks before the trip, as DAN suggests.

Who will look after you underwater
White Sands Dive Shop is a 5 Star PADI Dive Facility, a PADI International Resort Association member and licensed by the Belize Tourism Board. The shop is owned and operated by Elbert Greer, a PADI IDC Staff Instructor. You can read more about Elbert Greer, PADI IDC Staff Instructor.
Nerves are normal, and our students say so. Minette Layne, who came to Elbert for a refresher, wrote: “I was so panicked and you really calmed me down and set me up for a wonderful couple of weeks of diving and snorkeling.” Vivake K. Bhalla said Elbert “was very friendly and fun, but equally very strict about safety.”
