Lost PADI Certification Card: How to Replace It Before Your Dive Trip

A lost PADI certification card is one of the most common worries we hear from travelers a week before a dive trip. The plastic card is in a drawer at home, in an old wallet, or simply gone. The good news is that your certification is not lost with it, and PADI offers several ways to replace the card or show your certification.

This guide is for certified divers who have misplaced their card, never received it, or want a digital backup before they travel. We explain PADI’s replacement options, what the PADI eCard shows, what kinds of proof dive operators generally look for, and why your logbook belongs in your bag too.

What should I do about a lost PADI certification card?

Quick answer: Order a replacement through PADI.com or your local PADI Dive Center or Resort. PADI says a digital replacement, the PADI eCard, arrives within 24 hours of purchase and lives in the free PADI App. Physical cards can be ordered too. Do it before you travel, and pack your logbook as well.

How to replace a lost PADI certification card

Losing the card does not undo your training; you only need a new way to show it. According to the PADI certification card and eCard FAQ, you can buy a replacement at your local PADI Dive Center or Resort or order it online at PADI.com.

  1. Have your details handy: your full name, birth date and, if you can find it, an old card photo or diver number, since these are what the card shows.
  2. Choose a format: a digital eCard, a physical card, or both. PADI offers standard and limited edition designs and a discounted price for both formats together.
  3. Order online or through a dive center: PADI.com or any PADI Dive Center or Resort can handle it.
  4. Open the PADI App: sign in with your PADI account to see the eCard once it is ready.

PADI notes that the PADI App uses a single sign-on with one email address and password. If you cannot log in, you may need to create a PADI account first, and your local PADI customer service team can help.

The PADI eCard and the PADI App

PADI describes the eCard as an electronic version of the plastic certification card. It displays the information that instructors and dive operations around the world need to verify your certification, and it is held in the free PADI App on your phone.

According to PADI, an eCard shows the same details as the plastic card:

  • your certification level, full name, diver number and birth date
  • the certification date and your instructor’s name and number
  • dive center or resort information, depending on the store

The biggest advantage is speed. PADI says digital replacement cards arrive within 24 hours of purchase, and all your certifications sit in one place on your mobile device. The PADI App for eCards and dive logs also holds your eLearning courses and a digital logbook.

If you never received your card

Sometimes the card is not lost at all; it simply never arrived. PADI’s advice is to wait a month after you complete your certification, then contact the PADI Dive Center, Resort or Instructor who certified you. Some instructors and dive centers ask to receive their divers’ cards.

PADI adds that your instructor or dive center may be able to email you a temporary certification card and check the mailing address on file. If they do not have your card, PADI’s regional customer service teams can help.

What counts as proof of certification

Dive operators generally want to see your certification level before taking you diving, and each operator sets its own policy. The table sums up the common forms of proof, what each shows and how to get it. Ask your dive operator ahead of time which ones they accept.

Why your logbook matters too

A card proves your training, but a logbook shows what you have done since. It tells an operator how many dives you have, how deep you have been and when you last dived. Our guide on how to log a dive and what to record explains what to write down.

If your last dive was a while ago, consider a scuba refresher course on Ambergris Caye. PADI says certifications do not expire, but that dive shops appreciate seeing a recent refresher date on your card.

A before-you-travel checklist

  • Find your card or order a replacement at least a few days before you fly.
  • Install the PADI App, sign in and check that your eCard opens before you leave home.
  • Pack your logbook, or make sure your digital log is up to date.
  • Send your certification details to your dive operator before you arrive, so any questions are settled early.

PADI says digital replacement certification cards arrive within 24 hours of purchase. You view them in the free PADI App.

Does my PADI certification expire?

No. PADI says certifications do not expire, although a refresher is recommended if you have not dived in a while.
